Volendam turned the tables on Excelsior and handed the last place to Ajax

FC Volendam clinched its second win of the season at home. On the banks of the IJsselmeer, Excelsior was ahead in the first half, but Volendam prevailed in the second half: 3-1.

Due to Ajax’s defeat at PSV, Volendam ceded the last place in the standings to the weak record champions from Amsterdam. Ajax still have two games left, including against FC Volendam. The postponed match will be rescheduled for next Thursday at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

VAR helps Excelsior

An open and engaging first half was full of possibilities. One goal was disallowed but VAR intervened: Couhaib Driouech was not offside when receiving a fine pass from Redouan El Yaakoubi.

After the break, Volendam decided. Benaissa Benamar brought the score to 1-1 with Josh Flint’s pass, which was followed by a 2-1 score. Stijn van Gassel blocked Robert Mühren’s shot, but the ball went over the striker’s head and into the goal.

Van Gassel made a mistake after Volendam’s Bilal Ould-Chikh and Darius Johnson hit the aluminum, which Milan de Haan gratefully capitalized on.
