Aryna Sabalenka made a convincing start with the season’s top eight players at the year-end tournament WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico. The Belarusian world number one confidently defeated Greek Maria Sakkari: 6:0, 6:1.
Sabalenka won 11 consecutive matches, using five of her nine break points; Sakkari, on the other hand, survived three match points on his own serve and managed to get rid of the zero behind his name. The match ended in the 74th minute.
“A tough opponent”
“Maria is a player who can always come back into the game,” said Sabalenka, who lost twice to Sakkari in previous WTA Finals. “If you give him a little chance, he’ll accept it. “This makes him a formidable opponent.”
In the same group, American Jessica Pegula defeated Kazakh Elena Rybakina with sets of 7-5, 6-2. Rybakina won the first set but could not finish her own serve as she took a 5:3 lead.
