Three days after chaotic rescue, Orange Short Trackers are still taking gold

Sunday’s wild season finale at the Montreal World Cup had a special ending for the Dutch short track speed skaters. According to the International Skating Union (ISU) report, the winner is the Dutch team, not South Korea.

Accidents occurred in all four participating countries during the race. This caused great confusion among the skaters and led to complete chaos. It then took over half an hour to view and evaluate all race events.

Ultimately, South Korea won ahead of the Netherlands and the United States.

Racing revisited

Now the ISU says this conclusion is wrong. After the Netherlands’ objection, the race footage was re-examined. Upon closer examination, South Korea only completed 26 of the 27 completed rounds. The Netherlands was now declared the winner and South Korea came in second.

After the season, Selma Poutsma talked about having had “the most chaotic season of her career.”

“There were incidents happening at every point along the track, so at a certain point we didn’t know anything anymore,” Poutsma said afterwards. In the end, he said, things happened that “couldn’t have actually happened.”

ISU regrets the situation and apologizes for the mistakes made, especially to the affected teams.
