Favorite Fox does not start in Paris-Roubaix due to positive corona test

Marianne Vos will not be present in Paris-Roubaix on Saturday. The big favorite for the win, the multiple world champion tested positive for the corona virus a few hours before kick-off.

“The disappointment is huge,” Vos told his team’s Jumbo-Visma website on Saturday. “I was looking forward to this match. When I came back positive this morning, the world fell on my head.”

Vos, 34, finished second behind Britain’s Elizabeth Deignan at the inaugural women’s Paris-Roubaix last year and is looking to win this year. Due to the positive test, he now has to go home without a car.

Vos has nothing to complain about and the corona measures are no longer so strict, but Jumbo-Visma adheres to strict protocols. Riders and staff members test daily. Vos tested positive twice on Saturday and accepted the result.

“I support the team policy. You should not take any risks with regard to your health. I’m going home, resting and hopefully I’ll continue to feel good.”

Jumbo-Visma still has two Dutch drivers

Departure from Paris-Roubaix for women is scheduled for Saturday at 12:25 PM and arrival at 3:50 PM after 124.7 kilometers. In the absence of Vos, there are many Dutch suitors including Lucinda Brand, Chantal van den Broek-Blaak and Ellen van Dijk. Belgian cycling enthusiasts especially hope for Lotte Kopecky.

The Jumbo-Visma team has two Dutch women without Fox in Paris-Roubaix: Teuntje Beekhuis and Riejanne Markus. Other runners are Romy Kasper and Linda Riedmann from Germany and Coryn Labecki from the US.

The 119th edition of Paris-Roubaix for men is scheduled for Sunday. It covers a distance of 257.7 kilometers. Last year the Italian Sonny Colbrelli won and Mathieu van der Poel was third.
