Puebla won! TAS gives three points back to La Franja after FMF error

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS, in its French acronym) ruled in favor of Puebla and returned the 3 points it lost against Xolos de Tijuana for alleged incorrect positioning in the 7th round of the Apertura 2023 Liga MX, but maintains the economic sanction of approximately 100,000 pesos against the “camoteros”.

“The sanction imposed on Club Puebla FC has been lifted.” The highest authority in professional sports reported how ESPN announced that the seventh round match had been lost 0-1. Moreover, the CAS added.

The sanction imposed on Club Puebla FC, amounting to a fine of one thousand UMAS, remains in force.

Puebla had lost the three points it had achieved on September 1 after beating Tijuana due to a misalignment by technical assistant Luís Miguel Noriega.

The FMF disciplinary committee announced this last September.

After analyzing the evidence presented and collected, it is concluded that: Technical assistant Luis Miguel Noriega Orozco took part in the match in the 7th round, while sitting on the bench of the technical committee, without being present in the registered lineup sheet.

La Franja later appealed the decision to the Mexican Football Federation, arguing that registration was not possible but that the referees had been notified and therefore the process had to be done manually.

Faced with the FMF’s refusal, Puebla turned to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to appeal the sanction. CAS held a hearing with officials and referees this week.

After a few days of analyzing the case, the CAS ruled in favor of Puebla.

In turn, the FMF issued a statement guaranteeing that it “will always act in accordance with the authority’s regulations.”

Now La Franja has the opportunity to qualify directly for the championship. The “Camoteros” rose from 12th place in the rankings with 19 points to seventh place with 22 points.

Meanwhile, Xolos are the worst hit, dropping from seventh to ninth place after deducting the 3 points from the seventh round.
