PSV coach Peter Bosz is proud of Jerdy Schouten’s inclusion in the Dutch team’s final selection for the remaining European Championship qualifiers. The 26-year-old midfielder played his only international match in June 2022 and could return after more than a year away thanks to a strong start to the season at PSV.
“One of the reasons he came back to the Netherlands was that he hoped to be more visible to the Dutch national team,” Bosz said at a press conference. “Four months later, I made it.”
Schouten played football for Italian club Bologna in recent years. Bosz understands very well that he has decided to return to the Premier League this summer with the national selection in mind. “I think it makes sense for a national coach to follow the Dutch tournament more than individual players across Europe.”
According to Bosz, this also helps Premier League leaders PSV have had an excellent season so far. Is he happy? “I am very satisfied and never dissatisfied. I’m very happy with the way things are going, but there’s always room for improvement. I will always identify things that need improvement.
As an example, Bosz cites the difficult Champions League match against Lens (1-0). “It was a very intense match because both sides kept going.” Bosz believes his team can play better under pressure.
Even a bigger lead than 1-0 would have helped. PSV created great opportunities but sometimes they did not have enough overview. For example, after a quick start, Hirving Lozano failed to pass the ball to Johan Bakayoko, who had a better position. Lozano sought his own success and failed. “He overlooked Johan,” says Bosz.
Bakayoko later left in disappointment, but according to Bosz, there was no major disappointment for the 20-year-old Belgian player. “He seemed a little surprised, I thought he wasn’t making a big fuss,” says Bosz. The 59-year-old coach therefore saw no reason to intervene. “I will always intervene if the team’s interests are harmed. But I don’t think that’s the case here.”
Bosz finds exemption regulation “unthinkable”
At the press conference, Bosz also talked about Mauro Júnior and Armando Obispo, who have not been in the PSV squad for months due to their injuries. According to Bosz, competitive minutes are crucial to being fully fit again. “I find it incredible that they were not allowed to take part in the Jong and the PPE clubs were able to prevent this,” the manager said.
Players aged 23 and under are allowed to play football only in promising teams. Mauro Júnior and Obispo are both 24 years old and therefore very old. “Where should we let our professionals play? “This only works in friendlies,” says Bosz.
“I think it is in the interest of Dutch football for these guys to get minutes. Before going abroad, you were still allowed to use exemption players. “This has now been completely removed and it’s crazy to put it into words.”
