Tottenham Hotspur had to swallow another bitter pill a week after their first defeat of the season against Chelsea. Visiting Wolverhampton Wanderers appeared to be heading for a 0-1 victory but Pablo Sarabia’s substitute turned things around and handed the home club a 2-1 victory.
The London team took the lead in the Premier League with a win over Manchester City, who will face Chelsea in the English capital on Sunday. But Spurs now had a serious hangover.
Tottenham, who were without Micky van de Ven for the rest of the year due to a thigh injury, got off to a bright start. Just over two minutes later there was a direct hit. Dejan Kulusevski played the ball behind the support leg past Pedro Porro, who then assisted Brennan Johnson with a throw-in.
Wolves could do little to counter this in the first half, but Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario had to stretch to defuse Mario Lemina’s cross.
Even after the break the home side barely managed to make a punch and, thanks to goalkeeper José Sá, Giovani Lo Celso’s shot did not disappear into the top corner shortly before the end of the game. However, the scoreboard shows 1:1 instead of 0:2 a little later. Sarabia, who had just entered the game, received Matheus Cunha’s pass with his right hand and sent the ball to the near corner with a fluid movement with his left volley.
And it wasn’t all at the Molineux Stadium. After a quick free kick in the midfield, Sarabia made a beautiful pass to Mario Lemina and finished perfectly in the seventh minute of extra time: 2-1.
