Alligators 6, Lions 10: These cats are not pets

A terrible debut from Venezuelan Omar Bencomo Jr. made the Caimanes de Barranquilla line up against the current from the first inning and the Lions won for the second time in a row, this time 10-6, in the series that ends on Sunday at the Édgar Rentería Stadium in the Colombian professional baseball league.

On a Saturday full of pets, the Cats acted wild from the first entry and defeated Bencomo in their season debut.

Four hits, including a triple and a homerun, resulted in Bencomo allowing six runs and walking two. He was relieved without being sad.

Bencomo’s terrible afternoon started with a free ticket and a wild pitch that put American Luke Brown on second base. From there, he scored the first run thanks to a single by Fernando Ávila.

Then Christian Sepúlveda, with Ávila and Jeissy De La Cruz circulating, hit a home run to left field and the Lions scored three more runs to make it 4-0.

Then Javier Rivas, already with Diego Chiquillo on the mound, drove in three more runs with a double to center field. They scored Carlos Martínez, who had reached base with a triple; Sneider Batista and Jackie Pertuz.

Richard Martínez took the win with impeccable mountain work. He completely tamed the Caimanes offense for five full innings. He allowed only two hits. No race. He walked one. He struckout three batters.

With the score at 10-0, Caimanes found its first run with a homerun by Manuel Boscán in the bottom of the sixth inning, already with Ramón Ulacio as pitcher.

Those led by José Mosquera only had enough to cover up the defeat, something they had only attempted once before this series. Leones linked two consecutive victories for the first time and left the last place in the standings, where it was relegated by losing for the second consecutive day against the Vaqueros, in Montería, with a score of 5–1.

The series ends this Sunday in Barranquilla and Montería. Both matches start at 5 p.m.
