Djokovic closes the year as number one again by beating Rune in the ATP Finals

Novak Djokovic won his first match at the ATP Finals in Turin. The Serbian defeated Dane Holger Rune with scores of 7:6 (4), 6:7 (1), 6:3 in the unofficial world championship where the eight best players of the year were determined.

This victory ensures that Djokovic will finish the year ranked number one in the world once again. This was the eighth time for the Serb, who already holds the record. Pete Sampras is second on the list. The American was ranked the world’s best player six times during the entire calendar year, followed by Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal (5).

Djokovic lost the Wimbledon final to Carlos Alcaraz last summer, but won everything after that. The tally now stands at nineteen consecutive wins.

The sinner also wins

Jannik Sinner took the lead in the green group in Turin by beating Stefan Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-4. The first matches in the red group will be played tomorrow.

Even though Djokovic lost 2-2 in the first set, he managed to respond immediately. The set then remained balanced and the Serb prevailed in the tiebreak (7:4).

The second movement showed many similarities to the first. Except Rune now wins the tiebreaker. He did this convincingly with a score of 7:1.

In the third set, Djokovic was broken once while Rune was broken twice. Djokovic grabbed the score at 5:2 and managed to take the match over the line.
