Alexander Zverev is off to a good start at the ATP Finals in Turin, traditionally the last major tennis tournament of the season. He defeated Carlos Alcaraz in three sets (7-6, 3-6, 4-6). This was the 20-year-old Spaniard’s third consecutive defeat.
Later in the evening, Daniil Medvedev and Andrei Rublev will play their first match in the red group.
The first matches in the other (green) group were played on Sunday. Novak Djokovic defeated Holger Rune (7-6, 6-7, 6-3), while Jannik Sinner defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas (6-4, 6-4).
The first set between Alcaraz and Medvedev was exciting. The Spaniard broke for the first time. He then turned the 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 lead.
However, Zverev did not give up and both tennis players took one point each in turn. A tiebreaker had to be decided. Zverev lost two serves, the most consistent of which was Alcaraz (7-3).
Zverev took a 3-0 lead in the second set. Alcaraz could not close this gap. The Spanish player, number two in the world, also fell far behind in the third set (4:2).
After Zverev fell and limped on the track, Alcaraz appeared to be back. This did not work and Zverev secured the victory with good points.
