Al Ghazi files lawsuit against Mainz after being removed from pro-Palestinian post

According to German media, Anwar El Ghazi is suing his former German employer, FSV Mainz, because he believes he was unfairly dismissed. El Ghazi’s contract was terminated earlier this month after the two-time Dutch international posted stories about the war between Israel and Hamas on social media.

El Ghazi is represented by German labor and sports lawyer Alexander Bergweiler, who has previously expressed doubts about the legality of dismissals without notice.

El Ghazi has a contract with the current number 16 of the Bundesliga until 2025.

“It falls within the scope of freedom of expression”

The former Ajax and PSV player was first warned by Mainz about the pro-Palestinian sign “From river to sea, Palestine will be free”. This slogan is used by Hamas, among others. A Palestinian terrorist group is trying to destroy the state of Israel. A majority in the House of Representatives recently described the slogan as a call to violence.

The German club later announced that El Ghazi expressed regret. The football player later denied this claim on social media. This was the last straw that broke the camel’s back.

Lawyer Bergweiler immediately stated that he did not see any expression in the new post that did not fall within the scope of freedom of expression.
