Brazil’s Federal Ministry of the Public Sector (MPF) on Tuesday requested that former footballer Robinho be ordered to serve a nine-year prison sentence in Italy for raping a woman.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office presented a statement to the Supreme Court (STJ) defending Brazil’s compliance with the decision, as it respects national law and would also serve to demonstrate Brazil’s commitment to the repression of crime and cooperation. legal.
In a statement, the MFP stressed that if Brazil does not force Robinho to serve the sentence, the state risks allowing impunity for a crime whose seriousness and authorship are internationally recognized.
The prosecutor also rejected an argument from Robinho’s defense that questioned the legality of the processes used to collect some of the evidence used to convict the former footballer.
Robinho, who is in Brazil although he does not have a passport and is therefore not allowed to leave the country, was found guilty by Italian justice in 2022 of involvement in the gang rape of a young Albanian woman in a Milan nightclub in 2013.
The verdict is final, but Brazil’s constitution prohibits the extradition of its citizens. Therefore, authorities in the European country have requested approval of the sentence so that it can be carried out in Brazil.
The rape took place in 2013, when Robinho was playing for AC Milan, and also involved a friend of his, Ricardo Falco, who had also been convicted.
