The ruthless Novak Djokovic defeated home favorite Jannik Sinner to win the ATP Finals title for the seventh time on Sunday, marking another milestone in his incredible career.
The 36-year-old Serbian lost to local heroes Sinner in the group stages earlier this week, but avenged himself with a superb performance to claim a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
The packed crowd at Pala Alpitour in Turin hoped to cheer on the 22-year-old Sinner to win the biggest title of his career, but Djokovic was on another level.
The world number one conceded just two points on serve in the first set, and when he broke Sinner’s serve in the fourth game, everything went in one direction.
At one point, Djokovic won 14 straight points against a player ranked fourth in the world before Sinner briefly thwarted the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
Sinner avoided a double break of service when Djokovic surprisingly missed a passing shot and Sinner again had break points in the sixth game but could not convert.
Djokovic also failed to convert the break points that would have given him a 5–2 lead as he made several mistakes.
The crowd did everything they could to cheer their man on, but Djokovic was undeterred and a double fault from Sinner ended the fight. Djokovic surpasses Roger Federer and is alone the most successful player in the history of the tournament.
His victories culminate in a year in which he won three of the four Grand Slam titles and took over the world number one spot from Carlos Alcaraz. To the concern of his rivals, he will enter 2024 as dominant as ever.
