Velzeboer, Poutsma and Van Kerkhof return to Beijing with short track team

Short track speed skaters Xandra Velzeboer, Selma Poutsma and Yara van Kerkhof will return to the track next month and will win gold in the relay at the 2022 Winter Olympics. You are part of the Dutch short track team participating in the World Cup competitions in Asia.

Suzanne Schulting, who was also in the Gold Team, is not in the squad due to her injury. Sjinkie Knegt was not nominated for the men’s competition.

Short track speed skaters will compete in Beijing, China, from December 8-10. A week later, from December 15-17, the team will be in Seoul, South Korea.

A total of eleven drivers will travel to Asia. For women, these are the “golden” Velzeboer, Poutsma and Van Kerkhof, as well as Michelle Velzeboer and Diede van Oorschot. The men’s team consists of Jens and Melle van ‘t Wout, Friso Emons, Teun Boer, Itzhak de Laat and Kay Huisman.

Schulting suffered a cut on her back after falling during training at Heerenveen earlier this month and was unfortunately struck by Xandra Velzeboer’s skate. Schulting hopes to return during the European Championships in Gdansk, Poland (January 12-14).

No more re-kneading

Knegt is not part of the Dutch short track team. The selection committee did not select the 34-year-old Frisian, meaning he will miss his third and fourth World Cup of the season.

Knegt was also absent from the first World Cup match played in Montreal, Canada, earlier this season. This was the first time the four-time world champion was overlooked for sporting reasons. He was not fit enough at that time, this was due to the fact that he was taking part in the recording of the TV show “The Biohack Project” in the summer.

It is unclear whether sporting reasons were also the determining factor in distrusting Knegt this time.
