Dortmund continues in the Champions League after AC Milan win, Simons eliminated by Leipzig

Borussia Dortmund guaranteed to advance to the knockout round of the Champions League Group F on Tuesday evening. The team defeated AC Milan 3-1 and was at the top of the league with 10 points.

In the same group, Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United could not go beyond a draw. The score became 1-1 at Parc des Princes thanks to Kylian Mbappé’s penalty in the 98th minute.

Three candidates for wintering

Only Paris Saint-Germain, which is three points short, will be able to overtake Dortmund.

It is not clear who will follow the German leaders in the round of 16. On the last day of the match, Paris Saint-Germain (7 points), Newcastle United (5) and AC Milan (5) still have a chance to stay in the winter.

The last group matches are planned for two weeks. Borussia Dortmund will next play against Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United will host AC Milan.

Olivier Giroud was allowed to score a penalty for AC Milan just five minutes after Nico Schlotterbeck’s handball. The Dortmund defender took a fierce shot from close range.

Schlotterbeck couldn’t do much about it, but the referee ruled it was a punishable handball. Giroud took the penalty with poor judgment and was parried by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, who took the right angle.

What the 37-year-old striker could not do, Marco Reus achieved at the other end of the field four minutes later. After the foul, Reus fired a penalty kick hard and decisively into the top corner. AC Milan equalized before halftime with a goal from Samuel Chukwueze.

In the second half, Dortmund took the lead again with Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. After a smooth attack, the 19-year-old English player deliberately sent the ball into the corner.

Karim Adeyemi, who came into the game instead of Donyell Malen, made the score 3-1 to Dortmund after 10 minutes. Goalkeeper Mike Maignan half-parried Adeyemi’s shot and then tipped the ball out of the goal, but only after the ball had crossed the line.

With a beautiful individual move in the last period, Adeyemi literally laid the foundation for the 4-1 lead. After a nice opening, he passed the ball to striker Niclas Füllkrug, who was completely free, and struck the crossbar with a devastating strike.

PSG and Newcastle in balance

Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United couldn’t go further than a 1-1 draw at the Parc des Princes. For a long time, it was thought that Newcastle United would deal another serious blow to the Parisians, but Kylian Mbappé converted the penalty in the 98th minute.

Paris Saint-Germain started the match energetically and created many great positions under the leadership of Kylian Mbappé, knowing very well that there was no possibility of losing the first match with a score of 1-4. The French gave Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope a lot of work in the first fifteen minutes.

However, Newcastle United took the lead. Alexander Isak was in the right place in the 24th minute when goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma had a relatively easy shot. Isak just scored the rebound.

Newcastle survived a second-half VAR check after Anthony Gordon pushed Achraf Hakimi into the box. The video referee decided that this was not enough for a penalty.

The Parisians eventually took the penalty midway through extra time for handball. Mbappé did not succumb to the pressure and scored convincingly to make it 1-1.

While Manchester City narrowly won 3-2 against RB Leipzig in Group G, Xavi Simons could not play due to his shoulder injury. City’s goalscorers were Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Julián Álvarez. Former Vitesse player Loïs Openda scored two goals for Leipzig.

Both City (first) and Leipzig (second) advanced to the round of 16. Young Boys won the other match in the group. The Swiss team defeated Red Star Belgrade 2-0 at home.
