Footage and audio from the microphone attached to Cardiff captain Ellis Jenkins during Friday night’s incredible victory over the Stormers gave fans a fascinating insight into what really happens in the heat of battle.
An earlier short clip featuring Jenkins was shown during the BBC’s live TV coverage of the game, but Cardiff have now released new footage of Jenkins during the match. It shows the former Wales captain giving personal advice to several teammates as he plots the South Africans’ downfall, masterfully managing a series of game situations. Cardiff won the game 31-24.
Jenkins has been a role model for many of the young players around him, leading by example with his actions and words. It was Jenkins’ excellent late pass that allowed Cardiff to advance and score a crucial late try.

The captain can be seen turning the ball over before roaring loudly as Cardiff defend the ball in the box. When Rhys Litterick appears to score the decisive goal after a powerful burst from young debutant Mackenzie Martin, Jenkins calls Martin over to give him a hug and tell him how important his role was in the effort.
The following video compilation shows just how influential Jenkins was. First, he can be heard analyzing Cardiff’s line-up with that damn Liam Belcher, and then giving advice to Ellis Bevan, the Wales under-20 midfielder. “Bev, now let’s talk a little about game management, shall we? In closing, let’s try to play and play on our terms. Let’s not expect an advantage, as the fight, according to her (referee Holly Davidson), continues on its course. Talk to Tinus (de Beer) about this.

The footage offers a fascinating insight into what happens in the collapse, with Jenkins putting his body in danger but continuing to support his teammates as the Stormers try to keep them off the ball.
“Don’t fight back,” Jenkins roars at Martin as he grabs his partner, adding, “Hard here, strong here, stay strong, I got you.”
He then praises Bevan’s contribution to the party, saying: “Great things, great things. However, don’t overdo it, take it slow.”
The following clips show Jenkins telling substitute Evan Lloyd to “bring some energy to the guys” but to stick to defensive systems and not rush into turnovers that aren’t working. And in a recent conversation with Martin, he adds: “Keep scanning, keep working. Don’t go into crisis. Check the numbers and hurt someone.
