Winterswijk canceled: No marathon on natural ice this weekend

There will be no ice skating marathon on natural ice this weekend. The ice rink in Winterswijk was the only realistic option, but the organization announced that it was no longer possible to hold the first marathon this weekend.

“They stopped spraying last night,” says ice master Auke Spijkstra. “This morning I saw that the windows of the car were not frozen and there was almost no ice left. “This is very sad.”

Spijkstra enjoyed helping people in the area. “About 25 people helped prepare the route and entrance. “Everyone was excited to see if this would continue, the enthusiasm was great.”

Anyway, spray again

According to Spijkstra, it will freeze again this afternoon. “We will spray again today to open the route for members, but we will no longer be able to reach the three centimeters required for a marathon.”

Every year, when the weather starts to freeze, different ice rinks compete to see who can run the first marathon on natural ice. Last year, this honor was given to Burgum in Friesland for the first time.

In previous years, Haaksbergen and Noordlaren operated alternately.
