A week after a 1-2 home defeat against FC Utrecht, Sparta Rotterdam narrowly defeated Heracles Almelo 1-0. The victory was thanks to striker Joshua Kitolano and goalkeeper Nick Olij.
Herakles started the match against Sparta confidently with a 5-0 victory in Almere City. Mohamed Sankoh came close to scoring an early goal against Sparta after his hat-trick last week. The shot went from Sparta’s feet just wide of the goal.
Oliy superior
Heraclied Bryan Limbombe was closer to scoring in the dull first half. However, Sparta goalkeeper Olij made a good save.
Even better was Olij’s save in the second half. Limbombe appeared to score at the far post after Anas Ouahim’s cross, but the Sparta goalkeeper threw himself forward. A world savior.
Kitolano strikes
Olij’s saves became even more valuable as Sparta scored at the other end. After Sven Sonnenberg lost the ball, Djevencio van der Kust crossed and Joshua Kitolano slotted the ball into the corner.
Heracles could not overcome this blow despite many substitutions. The home team’s performance was poor. Herakles goalkeeper Michael Brouwer followed in the footsteps of his colleague Olij and shone with a stoppage-time save following Django Warmerdam’s effort.
