F1: Lewis Hamilton, after his terrible 2023 season: ‘Is it me or the car?’

Lewis Hamilton The British Mercedes driver, seven-time Formula 1 world champion, confessed on Wednesday that in ‘Difficult times’ he began to doubt himself, just like in the past two years, and wondered whether he was not fighting for the title ‘for himself or with the car ‘ and realized that he was not sure about the extension with the German team.

In an interview with the BBC, compiled by Europa Press, Luís explained:

In difficult times like these, there will always be moments when you ask yourself, “Is it me or the car?” Do you still have it? Is broken? It’s like you lose the magic, the spark between you and the car that is extraordinary.

Hamilton already saw at the debut in Bahrain that Mercedes was “taking the wrong path”. “I asked for some changes, but they were not implemented.” He regretted it, so he later had “great conversations” with the team because “nobody knew exactly what the problem was.” nor “how to solve”.

I was frustrated in February because they weren’t making the changes I wanted. It was a kind of ‘zigzag route’ trying to get where we needed to be.

On the contrary, Red Bull, a team that has done an “incredible job” in 2023.

They had a recovery issue and resolved it this week. For us, though, we had to break down the wall when it came to aerodynamics. We had to reduce the downforce considerably and try to add it little by little. But every time we tried it got worse.

About extension until 2025. He admitted that at the beginning of the season he was not thinking about staying in the second World Cup. Damn long seasons.

It is tiring. There is a lot of shine and a lot of positivity, but it is not easy to do your best, maintain commitment and continue training. The pressure is great. They are constantly under scrutiny and I am at a point in my life where there is no way to win.

And the English pilot added:

When I win a race I think: “Ah, he’s a seven-time world champion, you have 103 wins.” If I don’t do well, it’s crucial… I can only lose at that moment. So there was probably a moment where I asked myself if I wanted to experience this.

However, he concluded that he “still loves driving.”

When they start the car and you have all those people around you, the team, you go to the pit lane, I still understand that. I smile the same way I did the first day I rode.

Finally, Hamilton appreciated the season of Dutchman Max Verstappen, who is committed to ‘relaxing at the front’ in 2023, on a course in which the Briton believes that he ‘didn’t sweat at all’.

Even when we chased him in Austin, I don’t think he broke a sweat, he managed to keep it under control. When you are in this position, the car will go further and the tires will last longer. You are in a beautiful place and it is incredible.
