For Stefan de Vrij and Denzel Dumfries, the best match between Internazionale (number two in Serie A) and Napoli (fourth) ended in a defeat. The Dutch saw their team win (0:3) against the national champions and retake the lead from Juventus but were eliminated due to injury.
In Naples, people sat down for a change. The reigning champions played at home against possible new champions Italy. A laser and light show got the crowd warmed up for a true Serie A winner.
In this big match, Dumfries and De Vrij started the kick-off for Inter, who wanted to take over the lead from Juventus. The third Dutchman, Davy Klaassen, had to watch from the bench.
De Vrij’s match ended rather quickly. The defender, once again a regular player for the Italians and who has recently impressed with the Dutch, went down after just over quarter of an hour. A few minutes earlier, the 31-year-old Dutchman had failed in the sprint duel.
After being examined by the club doctor, De Vrij stood up and spoke to several teammates. He had to tell them he couldn’t continue.
Inter had a difficult time at Napoli without De Vrij. Matteo Politano decided to take a hard shot and hit the crossbar, and shortly before that, North Macedonian Eljif Elmas came close to goal with a shot from long range, but then Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer cleared the ball at the intersection.
Inter scores
It was Inter who showed how to deal with such attempts. One minute before the tea break, Hakan Çalhanoğlu decided to put a real shot into Alex Meret’s goal from about 25 meters. The goalkeeper managed to dive into the corner but before he knew it the ball was already in the bottom left corner.
0-2 also followed, but only in the second act did Lautaro Martinez receive the ball on the sideline and see Nicolò Barella charging into the penalty area. The Argentinian passed the ball to the Italian and the midfielder knew what to do with it. After two fine footwork he made the score 0-2.
Marcus Thuram also made it 0-3 but Dumfries could no longer celebrate with his team. He also had to leave with a quarter of an hour left. The Rotterdam native grabbed his thigh muscles with a stern expression.
top position
However, even without the Dutch, the guest team managed to finish the match without much difficulty. This meant that the Milanese were able to inflict their fourth home defeat of the season on the current national champions.
For Simone Inzaghi’s team, this victory meant they were at the top of Serie A once again. This evening, though, De Vrij and Dumfries’ wounds were licked.
