A serious mistake cost the Dutch skaters victory in the team event at the World Cup competitions in Tomaszów, Poland. The time was not measured because Joy Beune forgot to plug in the transmitter. The Dutch team was disqualified.
Beune, Irene Schouten and Marijke Groenewoud showed good team pursuit and appeared to be heading for victory after Canada’s defeat in the final stage. But it turned out that time was not recorded while driving. Groenewoud saw this too when he crossed the finish line.
“I looked at the time display and realized we didn’t have time. We then quickly discovered Joy had no transponder and disqualification followed. “This is a hard lesson, this should not happen.”
Beune is guilty: “Someone took him away”
Beune was guilty. “I called my transponders before the race but they were not there. Someone took it. “Even though the rule is clear, I’ve just started.”
This is a new setback for the chasing team consisting of Beune, Groenewoud and Schouten. A bare ankle in March also cost this pursuit team the world championship title. Even then it was Beune who made the mistake. “I don’t understand it at all,” he said in Poland on Saturday. “I can’t say anything useful about this right now. “It’s my fault again.”
