Yulimar, four-time world outdoor champion, three-time indoor champion and gold medalist in Olympic Games Tokyo 2020won the vote over the list of finalists, which also included the Dutch Femke Bol, world gold in the 400m hurdles and 4×400, and world record holder in the indoor 400m; and Jamaican Sherica Jacksongold and silver in the world at distances of 200 and 100 meters, respectively.

Venezuelan athlete trained by Cuban Ivan Pedroso in the Spanish city of Guadalajara, she was the only one of the five finalists to have received this award earlier in 2020, and with this award she tied the Americans by two awards Marion Jones (1997 and 1998) and Sanya Richards-Ross (2006 and 2009).
