Luton Town have issued a new statement regarding the condition of captain Tom Lockyer, who suffered a cardiac arrest during a Premier League match on Saturday.
It is the second time this year that Lockyer has collapsed on the pitch after a similar fate in the play-off final at Wembley against Coventry City. Lockyer underwent heart surgery and was cleared to return to the field.
The match against Bournemouth was abandoned and Hatters manager Rob Edwards was left in tears after the match was stopped. Luton issued an initial statement saying Lockyer “responded and was taken to hospital”. They later confirmed that the Welsh centre-back had suffered a cardiac arrest. They released a new statement 24 hours after the incident, saying he remains in hospital for further tests and asking that his privacy be respected at this difficult time.
“Although our captain Tom Lockyer remains in hospital following the cardiac arrest he suffered yesterday at Bournemouth, we understand that fans are worried about him and that there is widespread media interest in his condition,” the statement said.
“Tom is still undergoing tests and scans and is awaiting the results before determining the next steps for his recovery.
“We cannot immediately comment on his situation and would ask all media outlets to wait for updates to be released through the club’s official channels when the time is right.
“We all wish Tom, his partner Taylor and the entire Lockyer family the best and ask that you respect him and his privacy at this difficult time.”
