Russian Football Union (RFU) voted this Wednesday against leaving UEFA and join Asian Confederation (AFC), holding out hope for a speedy return to competition at Europe’s highest governing body.
President of the RFU, Alexander Dyukovcommented after said vote that a move to AFC is not completely ruled outbut spoke of “certain progress in relations with UEFA” despite the sanctions.
UEFA and also FIFA, World governing body bans Russian national teams and clubs participate in international competitions after the start Russian military invasion of Ukraine. It was then that the idea of leaving UEFA arose in Russia. In addition, UEFA’s recent plan to readmit Russian under-17 teams was not implemented.
“Of course we are unhappy” said Dyukov about the conversations that have taken place so far with UEFA. He warned that there was no guarantee that Russian teams would be able to play in AFC tournaments, as such membership would also require FIFA approval.
Vice President of the RFU, Alkhmed Aidarov, said that the future of Russian football is in Europe, not Asia.
