Heracles Almelo appointed Erwin van de Looi as John Lammers’ successor as coach. The 51-year-old football coach and former Vitesse, NAC Breda, Stuttgart and FC Groningen player has signed a season-and-a-half contract as head coach of Premier League club Almelo.
Herakles, under his predecessor Lammers, have lost five of their last six games and then suffered a 4-0 home defeat last Sunday against Feyenoord under interim coach Hendrie Krüzen. The Almelo club is currently in fifteenth place and has already been eliminated from the KNVB Cup.
“I’m happy to be here and looking forward to starting here,” Van de Looi told the Herakles website. “I know Heracles Almelo as an energetic team that plays good football and interacts with the stands. “That’s what I advocate for, and I want to combine that with positive outcomes for the people here.”
Third first division team
Herakles will be Van de Looi’s third club as manager in the Premier League. He started his coaching career at the top level at FC Groningen in 2013. With Groningers he won the KNVB Cup for the first time in the club’s history in 2015. After three years in Groningen, Van de Looi moved to Willem II, where he worked from 2016 to 2018.
The coach took care of the Dutch youth from 2018 until the summer of 2023. Under his management, Dutch youth were eliminated in the group stage of last summer’s European Championship, after which he resigned as national youth team coach.
The new Herakles coach will lead training for the first time on Tuesday, January 2. Selectors will travel to Marbella for a six-day training camp on Wednesday, January 3.
