The Russian Football Federation (RFU) voted on Wednesday against leaving UEFA and joining the Asian Confederation (AFC). They still hope to return to the competitions of Europe’s highest governing body soon.
RFU President Alexandre Dyukov commented on this after the aforementioned vote. A switch to the AFC has not been completely ruled out, but despite the sanction he spoke of “certain progress in relations with UEFA”.
UEFA and FIFA, the world governing body, have banned Russian national teams and clubs from participating in international competitions following the start of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine. Then the idea arose to leave UEFA in Russia. Moreover, a recent plan by UEFA to re-create Russia’s under-17 teams has failed to materialize.
“Of course we are not satisfied,” said Dukov about the discussions that have taken place with UEFA so far. He warned that there was no guarantee that Russian teams would be able to participate in AFC events, as such membership would also require FIFA’s approval.
RFU Vice President Alhmed Aidarov explained that the future of Russian football lies in Europe, and not in Asia.
There will be no Asia. We are fighting for Europe, Russia is part of Europe and we will win. We decided not to join Asia and this decision was unanimously supported.
