Karanka, Spain new manager candidate for Granada relegation

Coach Aitor Karanka has been tasked with keeping Granada in the top tier of Spanish football. The 48-year-old Spaniard replaces interim coach Rubén Torrecilla, who scored four points in five games under Granada’s leadership. Granada is just above the relegation zone with 29 points from 32 matches in La Liga.

Former international Karanka played for Athletic Club de Bilbao and Real Madrid, among others, and the defender won the Champions League three times. As a coach, he gained experience as assistant to Jose Mourinho at Real. He was England head coach at Karanka, Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest and Birmingham City. He led Middlesbrough to the Premier League in 2016.

Karanka left Birmingham City a year ago. He is now starting his first job in Granada as head coach in his home country. Karanka will make his debut on the bench against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
