Harrie Lavreysen won the gold medal in the kilometer on the first day of the Dutch Track Cycling Championships. The two-time Olympic champion (sprint and team sprint) completed 1,000 meters in 58.978 seconds; this was more than three seconds faster than runner-up Daan Kool. Tijmen van Loon took bronze.
Lavreysen’s main rival and reigning world champion Jeffrey Hoogland did not take part in the non-Olympic discipline at the national championships in Apeldoorn. Hoogland had improved the kilometer world record (55.433) in Mexico two months earlier.
Lavreysen also became the Dutch champion in the kilometer in 2017; Van Loon had won the previous two races.
33-year-old Brian Megens won the Dutch pursuit title. He was too strong for Patrick Bos, who won the silver medal ahead of Cesar Beilo in the final.
Golden Bredewold
In women, Mischa Bredewold won the pursuit title for the first time at the national championships. The 23-year-old SD Worx rider, who won the European road championship last year, sees track cycling as a good outing and was too fast for Marjolein van ‘t Faith in the race for gold.
Lonneke Geraerts won the gold medal at the national championship in the keirin competition. The 21-year-old driver beat Kimberly Kalee and Ruby Huisman. Geraerts had previously finished second to Kalee in the 500 meter time trial.
