Arsenal fail to take the lead after home defeat against West Ham

Arsenal failed to reach the top of the Premier League. The Londoners had to come to terms with Liverpool due to their home defeat against city rivals West Ham United (0-2).

Earlier in the evening, Brighton & Hove Albion defeated Tottenham Hotspur 4-2 at home. Brighton’s Dutchman Jan Paul van Hecke was there for the whole match. Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was on the bench while teammate Joël Veltman and Spurs’ Micky van de Ven were injured.

This moved Brighton up to eighth place. West Ham are in sixth place. Liverpool took the lead with a 2-0 win over Burnley on Tuesday.

Arsenal were by far the side with the most possession and West Ham built a wall waiting for the counter-attack. This tactic suited the away team very well.

Just thirteen minutes later Tomas Soucek capitalized on a turnover in the Arsenal defence. A few minutes ago, the ball appeared to have crossed the defensive line, but since VAR could not prove this, the goal was conceded.

Ten minutes after half time the Hammers extended the lead. Konstantinos Mavropanos headed under the crossbar for a corner. Arsenal then had many opportunities but failed to capitalize on them. Saïd Benrahma missed the penalty for West Ham in the last minute and made the score 0-2.

Brighton win

Brighton took the lead with Jack Hinshelwood’s goal in the 11th minute. More than ten minutes later, the team from the South of England took the penalty, which João Pedro converted.

Barely twenty minutes later, Pervis Estupiñá scored the third goal of the match. A few minutes ago, Spurs striker Richarlison’s goal was disallowed. Tottenham’s victory looked very close when João Pedro made the score 4-0 in the 75th minute. The Brazilian scored again from eleven meters.

Tottenham could only score in the final stage. Goals were scored by Alejo Véliz and Ben Davies, making the result slightly less painful for Spurs.
