The fastest of the Dutch sprinters is the lightning-quick Jenning de Boo. The 19-year-old skater won the national championship in the 500 meters on the first day of the Daikin NK distances in Heerenveen. After the sprint athletes ran 500 meters twice, the times were added up to determine who completed the 500 meters fastest.
De Boo also won the 500 meters race with times of 34.44 and 34.49. He scored 68.93 points in total, breaking Michel Mulder’s 2013 score record in the Netherlands. Silver left Janno Botman (69.49) and Merijn Scheperkamp (69.55) unlucky in the rankings.
Boo was then “on another planet”, so happy. “It’s a long way, I wouldn’t have dared to dream of it last night. “It’s a uniquely Dutch championship, it’s truly incredible.”
The three 500 meters medalists did not automatically receive starting tickets for the World Championships in Calgary, Canada (February 15-18). These tickets were awarded to the three fastest drivers of the day.
After the first 500 meters, De Boo (34.44), Botman (34.62) and Scheperkamp (34.69) qualified for the World Championships. However, in the second race over 500 metres, Stefan Westenbroek pushed Scheperkamp off the podium with a time of 34.67. In the second race, Scheperkamp achieved a time of 34.86.
Three men from Reggeborgh to the World Cup
De Boo, Botman and Westenbroek, all running for Team Reggeborgh, qualified for the World Championships as the fastest runners of the day. De Boo’s world-leading time of 34.44 was particularly impressive. Only Japan’s Tatsuya Shinhama went faster (34.40) this season.
De Boo is the second youngest national champion in the 500 meters. Only Gerard van Velde, now De Boo’s coach at Team Reggeborgh, was 258 days younger than him when he won the title in 1991.
Scheperkamp no, Westenbroek goes to World Cup
De Boo’s enthusiasm corresponded to Scheperkamp’s chagrin. “I am shocked. “This medal is really beautiful,” he said. “But you want to go to the World Cup and it didn’t work out. This is an elite sport and you are judged for your mistakes.
Scheperkamp was passed in the second 500 meters by Westenbroek, who sat in midfield with mixed feelings. “Because I’m not on the podium, but I will qualify for the World Championships. I didn’t even have that 34.67 in my head. I just thought: go with this banana.
The national championships continue on Friday. The men will compete twice in the 1,500 meters and the women in the 3,000 meters and 500 meters.
