Dutch darts player Berry van Peer has retired honorably from the World Championships in London. In the third round, 27-year-old Brabander narrowly failed to beat Damon Heta, number ten on Australia’s ranking list: 3-4.
Van Peer was leading 2-0 and took the advantage to start the final set with a score of 3-3, but it did not work. “Then you go 2-0 up and you completely lose control of everything,” Van Peer said afterwards.
“A belated Christmas present for Heta, so to speak. “There is no longer Scott Williams in the next round (the opponent he will face in the last 16 if he wins, editor’s note), only me on the bench.”
“Barney” and Van Gerwen
Raymond van Barneveld will be on the field this afternoon and Michael van Gerwen, the last two Dutchmen of the tournament, will also be on the field this evening.
Van Barneveld, 56, will face Wales’ Jim Williams in the third round. Three-time world champion Van Gerwen is already in the round of 16. His opponent is Englishman Stephen Bunting.
Van Peer won the first set convincingly 3-0, thanks to the break in the second leg. He finished the set well with 142 points and confidently entered the dressing room for the first break of the game, with the enthusiasm of the crowd.
And Van Peer may have some confidence in Australia’s Heta, who is ranked nearly a hundred places higher in the world rankings. Despite losing the first two legs, Van Peer also won the second set.
Difficult
In the next two sets, Van Peer lost his level while Heta started shooting better. It was 2:2. By the third time Heta wrote a sentence, Van Peer’s task became increasingly difficult.
At this point, not only was Van Peer’s average much lower than his opponent’s (107.61 at 86.95), but Heta was also allowed to start the next set. As a result, Van Peer had to take a break. He was successful: He won the set 3:1.
Van Peer was allowed to start in the decisive final set, but Heta was better. He scored an amazing 151 points.
“It didn’t go the way I wanted,” sighed Van Peer, who damaged two ribs in a recent fall. He heartily felt that his level had dropped significantly after taking a 2-0 lead. “I couldn’t find more threesomes.”
