It doesn’t go any further: Brazil fires Fernando Diniz

Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) president Ednaldo Rodrigues fired coach Fernando Diniz on Friday, a day after regaining his position through a court decision.

Diniz, who combined his work in the national team with that of coach of Fluminense, led Brazil in six matches in the World Cup qualifiers, with a balance of three defeats (Uruguay, Colombia and Argentina), one draw (Venezuela) and two wins , against Bolivia and Peru.

The CBF hired Diniz as interim coach last July, to manage the five-time world champions until mid-2024, when Rodrigues hoped to hand over the baton to Italian Carlo Ancelotti.

The CBF president assured on several occasions that the Real Madrid coach was committed to leading Brazil from the 2024 Copa América.

However, Ancelotti extended his contract with Real Madrid last week, at a time when Ednaldo Rodrigues had been removed from the CBF presidency by a court decision, although a Supreme Court ruling last Thursday restored him to power.

The favorite to replace Diniz at the top of the ‘Canarinha’, according to the Brazilian press, is Dorival Júnior, current coach of São Paulo and champion of the Copa Libertadores in 2022 with Flamengo.

Diniz’s situation had become untenable due to the poor results he achieved in his short time on the bench, which saw Brazil finish the year in sixth place in the qualifiers, something unprecedented for the five-time world champions.

Brazil had never lost three games in a row in qualifying in its history and ended a year with more losses than wins for the first time since 1963.

Part of the blame was placed on Diniz’s predecessor, also interim Ramon Meneses, with whom Brazil lost the friendly matches against Morocco and Senegal in the first round after the World Cup in Qatar.
