As reported by RTL radio on Tuesday, the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner’s lawyers filed the lawsuit after Darmanin assured that Benzema’s ties to the Muslim Brotherhood were “obvious.”
“Someone’s name is only dragged for communication reasons. With significant family consequences for loved ones,” the lawyer told RTL radio.

Darmanin made these statements a few days after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, after Benzema deemed the bombing of the Palestinian territory unfair.
The lawyer of the former Real Madrid player assured that these types of statements by the minister “sow division” in the country: “If you listen to them, some people exclude Karim Benzema and others feel excluded when they hear them.”
“It is the opposite of what is expected of someone who considers himself a statesman,” he added.
