TeamNL is very pleased with the expulsion of Paralympic athletes from Russia and Belarus

The Dutch Paralympic team is pleased that athletes from Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to participate in the event, which kicks off on Friday. TeamNL and other teams had protested against the decision of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to allow athletes from countries involved in the military occupation of Ukraine to compete under a neutral flag. But a day later, Russians and Belarusians were excluded.

TeamNL Head of Mission Esther Vergeer requested that the Russians be able to participate on Monday. “But the war is getting so intense and crossing all boundaries that we have to do everything we can to get the message across. The sports world should also accept this. Normally you don’t want to mix politics and sports. but we’ll get there.” don’t come down now.”

Vergeer says that eight Dutch Paralympic athletes also feel the same way. “The voice I heard was, ‘Russian athletes are good guys and well trained for it. But whatever happens in Ukraine, we have to stop it.” The subject keeps athletes busy, but they also want to be able to isolate themselves from it. “They also want to put in their best performance here.”
