Brazilian Palmeiras win South American Super Cup

Brazilian football club Palmeiras has won the South American Super Cup. In the final, the winner of the Copa Libertadores, the South American variant of the Champions League, was too strong for the compatriots of Club Athletico Paranaense. By beating host Palmeiras 2-0, Palmeiras was enough to win the cup after the first match, which was a draw (2-2). Palmeiras had never won this award before.

The first goal was scored early in the second half by Zé Rafael, after which midfielder Danilo scored the second goal minutes before the end. Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira saw another red card after this goal for an argument with the rival coach.

Palmeiras has won the last two editions of the Copa Libertadores. Last month’s World Cup final against Chelsea was lost in extra time (2-1). Club Athletico Paranaense reached the final of the Super Cup by winning the Europa League-like Copa Sudamericana.
