UEFA currently does not suspend Belarus, putting KNVB in a difficult position

Belarusian national teams must play all home games on a neutral ground, without spectators. This has been decided by the European football association UEFA, because of Belarus’ participation in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russia had previously been completely banned from international football by UEFA and FIFA.

The new UEFA decision puts the KNVB in a difficult position. The Dutch Football Association announced on Monday that teams representing the Netherlands will not play against Russia and Belarus until further notice.

On April 12, the World Cup qualifiers will take place in The Hague, where Dutch players will compete against Belarus. It can be concluded from UEFA’s ruling that the match should be played simply.

In a response, the KNVB says it will stick to the earlier statement for the time being: “We have issued a clear statement: we will not play against Belarus until further notice.” The Dutch football association says it is in contact with UEFA.
