Leerdam is looking forward to ‘a well-oiled machine that I don’t have to think about’

After the Winter Games, transfers to the skating world are not uncommon. After Olympic successes or shattered dreams, skaters regularly look for a new challenge with another team. But unlike a few years ago, we are not worried about a lack of sponsors in the sport.

“If you look at this very black and white, 97% of Dutch skaters will be in WW in three weeks,” said Sven Kramer during the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. At the time, that was Lotto-Jumbo (predecessor of Jumbo-Visma). The only winning commercial team with a plan that extends to the next Olympics.

Concerns that are currently unrelated to long-term contracts from sponsors such as Jumbo-Visma, Reggeborgh and IKO.

Search for flag bearers

With the departure of Sven Kramer, Jumbo-Visma is looking for a new brand for next winter. Found in Jorrit Bergsma. But after Patrick Roest also left the cast of Jac Orie – Roest went to Reggeborgh with Marcel Bosker – Orie could use a big name. Before that it ended in Leerdam.

“Maybe they need me as a figure”, concludes Leerdam himself, “and of course for the performance. I think it’s a combination of both.”
