Belgian cyclist Tim Merlier cannot participate in the Giro d’Italia. His team Alpecin-Fenix confirmed a message from Wielerflits to Sporza on Wednesday. The top sprinter is still very impressed by the results of a fall in Paris-Roubaix a week and a half ago. The Giro starts on Friday, May 6 in Budapest, Hungary.
Merlier had to surgically clean an open wound on his right elbow after Paris-Roubaix. The injury did not heal in time for the start of the Giro. Merlier should also be taking antibiotics by the end of the week.
So Alpecin-Fenix is lacking a real sprinter. Merlier’s compatriot Jasper Philipsen will ride in the Tour de France next summer. The frontrunner is Mathieu van der Poel, who is preparing for the Giro in Spain.
Merlier (29) immediately won the second stage on his debut in the 2021 Giro. A stage win followed in the Tour de France.
