Botic van de Zandschulp advanced to the second round of the Munich clay tournament. World number 40 (highest placed) defeated American Brandon Nakashima after a particularly messy second set: 7-6 (3), 6-3.
Van de Zandschulp started his clay-court season with a quarter-final dock in Marrakech and a first-round defeat at the masters tournament in Monte Carlo.
Van de Zandschulp was the best at key moments in the German clay tournament where Martin Verkerk reached the final in 2004.
De Veenendaler led the first set 2-0, 40-15, but remained cool in the tiebreak despite being behind.
The two broke up in 2021
Just like the 26-year-old Van de Zandschulp, the twenty-year-old sole Nakashima broke through by reaching two ATP finals in 2021 (in Atlanta and Los Cabos). The number 76 in the world immediately beat the Dutchman in the second set, but did not penetrate completely.
Van de Zandschulp, a quarterfinalist at last year’s US Open, repaired damage to both sides’ messy sets (a total of five breaks). He then took the last time-out 3-2 and finished the game at 5-3 without any problems.
Van de Zandschulp will compete in the second round against the number 150 in the world, the Belarusian Yegor Gerasimov.
