Cyclist Sonny Colbrelli received permission from doctors at Padova Hospital to ride safely again. The 31-year-old Italian became ill during the Tour of Catalonia in March. Studies have shown that Colbrelli has cardiac arrhythmias. Later, an internal defibrillator was placed on the rider, who became European road cycling champion.
New research has shown “further improvements in cardiovascular health.” His team, Bahrain Victorious, was told Colbrelli could start with “leisure walks and light physical activity”. “The first priority is to continuously and closely monitor the condition in the coming months to ensure safety and return to normal operation.”
It is not yet known whether he can continue his cycling career. “I don’t feel like a former runner yet,” Colbrelli, last year’s Paris-Roubaix winner, told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
