FC Barcelona will play their matches for the 2023/2024 season at Estadi Lluís Companys de Montjuïc. Catalans will have to move to Barcelona’s Olympic Stadium as their Camp Nou accommodation is being renovated in the coming years.
The Barcelona city council on Thursday gave permission to the top flying club so that ‘Blaugranas’ can start the renovation of Camp Nou next summer.
Despite the efforts, FC Barcelona hopes to use almost the full capacity of Camp Nou for next season’s games. The 2023/2024 season will be different, because the demolition of the third ring of the iconic stadium will start in the summer of 2023.
‘Barca’ initially wanted to move to Estadi Johan Cruijff, the small stadium in the training complex. The selection has now been made for the Olympic Stadium, where athlete Ellen van Langen won Olympic gold in the 800 meters in 1992 and was able to accommodate almost 65,000 fans.
In the 2024/2025 season, Barcelona wants to return to Camp Nou, where about half of the places will be available. Completion of the work is currently planned for the 2025/2026 season.
Barcelona owes 1.5 billion euros
Members of the FC Barcelona club voted by a large majority last December on plans to renovate and expand the Camp Nou. The Spanish superpower takes out a loan of 1.5 billion euros for the ambitious project.
Opened in 1957, Camp Nou now seats about 100,000 spectators. After the renovation, there will be 110 thousand places.
The club management expects that ‘Barca’ will generate an extra 200 million euros annually with the renovated stadium. With this income, the financially troubled club hopes to be able to repay the loan within 35 years.
Barcelona have been playing at Camp Nou since 1957 and that has largely come out.
