PSV coach Schmidt approves transfer to Benfica. off

PSV coach Roger Schmidt has not yet confirmed that he will work at Benfica next season. “It’s not over yet,” he said before Sunday’s home game against Willem II. “I don’t want to talk about my future either. I want to finish the Eredivisie with PSV as high as possible.”

Benfica announced on Wednesday that it had reached an agreement in principle with Schmidt, who had previously indicated that he would leave PSV at the end of the season. According to the Portuguese club, the talks with the Germans are almost over, but the signatures are still missing.

Schmidt signed a two-year contract with PSV in 2020. In March of this year, the German announced that he would not renew this contract. Almost two weeks ago, he achieved his greatest success at the Eindhoven club by winning the KNVB Cup.

Schmidt (55) previously coached Salzburg, Bayer Leverkusen and the Chinese Beijing Guoan, which he fired in 2019. According to Benfica, he is intended to replace Nelson Verissimo, who took over from Jorge Jesus, who was fired in December. Benfica is in third place in the Primeira Liga with 68 points from 31 matches. FC Porto is in first place with 82 points.

Ruud van Nistelrooij replaces Schmidt at PSV.
