Michael van Gerwen was eliminated in the quarter-finals by James Wade on the twelfth night of the Premier League season. For Van Gerwen, the defeat is not insurmountable: the play-offs are difficult to get away with.
Dublin is one of Van Gerwen’s favorite host cities. To date, he has never lost, winning all nine matches played there.
Facing him tonight was grumpy Englishman Wade, who is fourth in the Premier League, two places behind Van Gerwen. Last week in Aberdeen, Van Gerwen defeated Wade 6-3 in the semi-final.
missed opportunity
But in Dublin Wade started the duel with Van Gerwen surprisingly strong. He crushed the Dutch 2-1 and seemed to be on his way to victory just as smoothly.
But Van Gerwen rallied, pushed Wade back and seemed to accelerate more and more. Still, Wade managed to throw two rounds of darts and missed it by a few inches.
