Cyclist dad can leave the hospital on Saturday

“The past three weeks have been very uncertain for me and the people around me,” Vader writes. “This was the main reason we kept the news. It allowed my family to focus on what really matters. Now that the situation is improving day by day, I can tell you a little more about my situation.”

The cyclist describes how he fell during the Basque Country Tour and ended up in the intensive care unit of the hospital in Bilbao with injuries all over his body. “The most serious at the time was that I had problems with my blood vessels that briefly deprived my brain of oxygen. I was under anesthesia for two weeks to allow my body to heal properly.”

Dad says he can’t remember when he fell until he woke up two weeks later. “I’ve been unconscious for over a week. I basically had to learn everything from scratch. It took time to walk again. I am very happy to ‘stay with you’ this fall. In the meantime, I was transferred to Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, where various experts examined my fractures. Starting tomorrow I can leave the hospital and continue working on my recovery at home.
