Ganna fulfills his favorite role in the battle against time and is the first leader of Tirreno-Adriatico –

Filippo Ganna fulfilled his favorite role by winning the first leg of Tirreno-Adriatico on Monday. The Italian was in a class of its own in the 13.9 km time trial with start and finish in Lido di Camaiore.

The time trial of 25-year-old Ganna lasted 15 minutes and 17 seconds. The time trial specialist kept Dane Kasper Asgreen’s time (15.40) short and then saw his stage win without danger.

Remco Evenepoel failed to threaten Ganna’s time (+11 seconds), but the Belgian did well with a second place overall. The podium was completed by Tadej Pogacar, who was just seven seconds slower than Evenepoel.

A stage win for Ganna was expected as the INEOS Grenadiers rider was the reigning World Time Trial Champion. He was six seconds faster than Wout van Aert in September and extended the 2020 title.

Best Dutchman in opening attempt Arensman

Two Dutchmen with Thymen Arensman and Jos van Emden entered the top ten. DSM driver Arensman had to give way to Ganna in 28 seconds and finished sixth with honors. Van Emden finished eighth in 33 seconds, the Italian winner.

Many drivers drive the Tirreno-Adriatico in preparation for the Giro d’Italia, which starts on May 6. The WorldTour race in Italy continues on Tuesday with a straight stage and lasts until Sunday.

Pogacar won the Tirreno-Adriatico last year and is again one of the favorites for the overall victory. The Slovenian already won the Tour of the United Arab Emirates and the one-day race Strade Bianche at the start of the season.
