Tennis player Van de Zandschulp lost to Belgian Goffin in Madrid

Tennis player Botic van de Zandschulp was eliminated in the second round of the Madrid Masters tournament. The Dutch lost 4-6 2-6 to Belgian David Goffin in straight sets.

Van de Zandschulp defeated Spaniard Pablo Carreño Busta in the first round. He scored more than one match point in that game.

Van de Zandschulp reached the final of an ATP tournament for the first time in Munich last week. He later had to stop breathing problems but recovered quickly enough to return to action in Madrid.

Goffin has never played against Van de Zandschulp before. Liège had qualified for the main tournament in Spain through qualifying matches.

Rafael Nadal is Goffin’s next rival. The third-seeded Spaniard defeated Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 6-1 7-6(4) in straight sets. He made a successful comeback.

Nadal lost the Indian Wells final to Taylor Fritz in March and was subsequently out of the field for weeks due to a stress fracture in his rib. Nadal has won the clay tournament in the Spanish capital five times and took his last win in 2017. Nadal is preparing for Roland Garros in Madrid, which starts on Sunday 22 May.
