An American consortium led by businessman Todd Boehly is paying £2.5 billion to buy Chelsea from Roman Abramovich. In addition, Americans want to invest £1.75 billion in the club, which amounts to about €2 billion. The money was intended, among other things, to rebuild the stadium at Stamford Bridge and to strengthen the women’s team and youth academy. Investments will also continue in the football stadium.
The goal is, as previously indicated by Abramovich, that the recovery amount (converted to almost 3 billion euros) goes to charities. The Russian owner of the English football club is not allowed to take anything from the sale as he is on the British sanctions list because of his ties to President Vladimir Putin. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Abramovich sells the club he has owned since 2003. Various parties have shown interest in recent weeks.
Chelsea announced Friday-Saturday evening that it has reached an agreement with the Boehly consortium, which co-owns the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball club and the Los Angeles Lakers basketball club. The club expects the acquisition to be completed by the end of this month. Americans then transfer the amount to a British bank account. If the British government agrees, the £2.5 billion will go entirely to charities.
Chelsea have faced all kinds of restrictions since Abramovich was placed on the sanctions list. For example, the London club, which won the Champions League last year, cannot buy players and conclude contracts.
