Finland and Latvia want the Ice Hockey World Cup to be taken over from Russia

Finland and Latvia want to jointly host the Ice Hockey World Cup in 2023. The tournament was awarded to Russia, but the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF withdrew that country due to its invasion of Ukraine. The World Federation welcomes the initiative of Russia’s neighboring countries.

“We are seriously considering this,” said Aigars Kalvitis, president of the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation. Our team is fully prepared, has experience and knowledge. We have a meeting with the Finns to take on our responsibilities together.” said.

Finland is already hosting the World Cup this year. Latvia itself took charge of the 2021 World Cup after the other host country Belarus left due to the dangerous situation in that country during the presidential elections. The IIHF will decide who will host the 2023 World Cup at a convention in Tampere, Finland at the end of May.
