Ireen Wüst finished fourth in her last World Cup race in the 1,500 meters. In the World Cup final in Heerenveen, Wüst played the final stage against stage and World Cup classification winner Miho Takagi.
Takagi crossed the finish line as the winner in 1.53.32, but Wüst also raised his hand and in an exhausted Thialf received a huge applause from all skating fans in all the stands. Wüst finished fourth with 1.54.77 and was the best Dutch skater in the final standings in sixth place.
As soon as the 35-year-old Olympic champion entered, she was greeted by a complete Thialf and Wüst clearly enjoyed it. He did not catch fire in his last race, but this was secondary.
Money for De Jong
There was a nice silver medal in the World Cup final for Antoinette de Jong. The 26-year-old skater completed the 1,500 meters perfectly, but with 1.54.33 did not come close to the fast Takagi. De Jong finished ninth in the standings.
