FC Utrecht misses goalkeeper De Keijzer, injured in European football fight

FC Utrecht will miss Fabian de Keijzer in their European football challenge in the coming weeks. The 22-year-old goalkeeper will not be able to play this season due to an injury to his thigh.

De Keijzer was injured on Saturday (1-1) away from PEC Zwolle by hitting the ball just before half-time. He was replaced by the German Eric Oehlschlägel.

“I immediately felt that something was not right,” says De Keijzer. “I find it very frustrating that I cannot help the team in the decisive phase of the season. But I can’t help but concentrate fully on my recovery, so that I can be there in the final phase of the season.” The preparations for the new season may return.

De Keijzer has been gaining confidence at FC Utrecht since January. He was preferred over Maarten Paes, who was not always convinced and left for the American FC Dallas that same month.

The 1-1 draw with PEC meant that Eredivisie number seven Utrecht would qualify for the play-offs of European football. Numbers five through eight normally compete to qualify for the Conference League second heat.

In the regular competition, FC Utrecht, which recently saw midfielder Bart Ramselaar quit due to an injury, still plays against AZ (Wednesday, home) and Willem II (Sunday, away).
